Writing a first draft is awesome because the possibilites are endless. But while first drafts can and should be bad, it’s also easy to make mistakes that will hinder your progress and make more work for yourself in the future.

We all have our favorite tropes, but... it’s no secret some of them are nearing cliche level. So how do we keep what we love about the tropes intact, but still give them a fresh twist? Here’s a quick guide to some popular romantic tropes + ideas to make them your own:

💘 Enemies to Lovers

Classic: They hate each other... until they don’t.
Subvert it: What if they’re reasons for being enemies can’t be fixed—what happens then?

💘 Fake Dating

Classic: They pretend to be a couple for reasons but catch real feelings.
Subvert it: What if they don’t fall for each other but instead become each other’s wingperson for their actual crushes?

💘 Love Triangle

Classic: Two people vie for one’s heart.
Subvert it: What if the person in the middle realizes they’re happiest solo? Or the two “rivals” fall for each other instead (espeically if it’s got some queer rep!)?
